Area Cultural Opportunities

A variety of activities are offered throughout the year to enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of Appalachian. The Office of Cultural Affairs presents a wide range of cultural activities for the Boone Area Community. The Performing Arts Series includes a variety of dance, theater, opera, symphony orchestra, jazz and chamber performances; and the Forum Series brings nationally and internationally known speakers to the campus on a regular basis. The Catherine Smith Gallery provides art exhibits throughout the year and hosts two national exhibits, The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition, and the Halpert Visual Arts Competition.

The Appalachian Cultural Museum offers the visitor the opportunity to see a slide program on the Appalachian Region and tour a museum of contemporary and historic Appalachian Art and memorabilia.

During the summer months, An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university's summer arts festival has recently included residencies and performances by the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Dance Theater, and the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble; theater performances co-produced the North Carolina Sheakspeare Festival and the Charlotte Repertory Theater; and lectures and workshops by the Smithsonian Institution. The School of Music, Department of Theater and Dance and the Department of Art offer faculty and student productions and exhibits throughout the year.
