
Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music
Designed to provide advanced study of the Orff-Schulwerk approach, this course involves experiences intended to enhance participants' understanding of, and teaching through, the process. Grounded in musical experiences appropriate for use with elementary and middle school students, course content will include moving, creating, singing, and playing experiences leading to deeper understanding of musical elements. Course content includes pentatonic scale study; orchestration writing (including simple and moving borduns; I-V; and I-IV-V accompaniments); advanced rhythmic experiences, including irregular rhythms and meters; vocal, movement, and instrumental improvisation; and soprano and alto recorder proficiency. Enrollment is limited to those who have satisfactorily completed an AOSA-approved Level I course. Maribeth Yoder-White, pedagogy and movement instructor, is a choral and general music education specialist. She is a frequent Orff-Schulwerk clinician as well as a respected choral conductor and adjudicator. She holds degrees from Lenoir-Rhyne College (B.M., Music) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (M.M., Music; Ph.D, Music) where she was a faculty member for nine years.
The recorder instructor will be Lisa Adkins Runner, Assistant Professor of Music Education in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Lisa holds degrees from Milligan College (B.A., Music, Education), East Tennessee State University (M.A., Media Services/Instructional Technology), and Appalachian State University (Ed.D., Educational Leadership). She completed all levels of Orff Certification at Western Carolina University with Konnie Saliba.
Registration Fee: $475 and includes all instruction and class materials, required textbooks, T-shirt, soprano recorder and closing dinner. Cost of meals (except closing dinner) are not included in the fee.
The Orff-Schulwerk Certification Course is being offered for 3 hours of graduate credit. Graduate credit fees are in addition to the registration fee. If interested, you will need to contact the ASU Office of Summer School at 828-262-3154 for further information on application and fees. It will be your responsibility to follow all procedures/payments, and to meet Summer Session's deadlines, in order to earn credit.
Academic Credit would be appropriate for those seeking a degree. The Orff certification and University statement of hours involved is usually acceptable for "teacher renewal". (Check with your school system.)

On-campus lodging will be available. Each air-conditioned suite consists of two bedrooms separated by a shared bath. Each bedroom can accommodate up to two people (double occupancy). Single occupancy is accomplished by one person per bedroom with a shared bath between the 2 rooms. All rooms have active phone ports. Participants will need to bring their own phone. Your roommate or suitemate must be a registered participant of this program. If you do not have a roommate, you will automatically be charged as single occupancy. Linens will be provided and consist of: 2 towels / 2 washcloths, 2 sheets / 1 pillowcase, and 1 pillow / 1 blanket. Residents will check-in on Sunday, June 8 from 7-9 PM.
